Biography of Jonathan Rousham

Born May 1st 1937,educated at Bedales 1942-1954, trained as a sculptor at Brighton College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools London. Specialised in wood and stone carving. Worked as a student assistant stone carving on various public building projects

In 1961 a friend arranged a personal meeting with Henry Moore at Much Hadham. This proved to be a turning point in his professional life. Overawed by Moore’s genius as well as his personal charm Jonathan realised that Moore’s mastery of the representation of external forms could not be surpassed and that sculpture must take a new direction.

1961-9 Worked as a sculptor, lecturer, director of the family owned iron foundry.

His work now tended towards the expression and ordering of symbolic images emerging from the invisible world-the world behind or beyond our conscious awareness. These images emerge during the course of life’s experiences from the core of material in the unconscious and are a source of vital energy and spiritual nourishment.

From 1970 Jonathan has worked as a sculptor and teacher. Since 1978 teaching at Lewes Prison where he still works part-time.
